About This Fishery
About This Fishery
Forth Coastal Sea Trout Fishing is a rare newly created fishery, opening up around 53 miles of estuary and coastal water on some of the most iconic shorelines in the Forth district. It offers legal rod-and-line access for sea trout anglers across sections of the Fife and Musselburgh coasts during the migratory season. The scale, access and variety make it unlike almost any other local permit fishery. It is designed as a sea trout-exclusive permit, while also helping support habitat work on the rivers feeding the Forth.
Fishing Opportunities
This fishery offers sea trout fishing right through the migratory season on a huge range of coastal terrain, from harbour edges and promenade water to rocky ledges, bars, pools, seams, flats and quiet bays. Because it is a new legal fishery, much remains to be discovered about where and when the trout fish best. Anglers can explore flood tides, ebb tides, dusk, dawn and night conditions across widely separated areas. Other saltwater species such as cod, bass and mackerel may also add interest while sea trout fishing.
Conservation & Stewardship
This permit is built around conservation as much as opportunity. Because the scale and seasonal behaviour of estuary sea trout stocks are not yet fully understood, the fishery operates with mandatory 100% catch and release. Anglers are encouraged to use tackle suited to safe release, particularly barbless and single-point hooks where possible, and to handle fish carefully in rubber landing nets. Permit income supports upriver habitat work, so fishing here also contributes directly to improving the rivers that sea trout depend on.
Planning Your Visit
Preparation is essential on this fishery. Before going out, anglers should study the downloadable maps carefully because there are no physical markers showing where permitted fishing begins or ends. Wind, tide, swell and access should shape every trip, and an escape route should always be identified before fishing. Public parking and paths make most areas easy to reach, but safety remains the priority on any coast. Check conditions, tell someone where you are going, take a phone and be ready to adapt your plans.
